Lumen Atelier
A photorealistic 3D CGI design study exploring spatial illumination, physically based materials, and sculptural form for a luxury lighting maison.

Reimagining the Materiality of Light
In product visualization, perfection is the enemy of realism. Computer graphics that appear sterile fail to convey the value of luxury craftsmanship. For Maison Lumen, our objective was to make digital pixels feel tactile, heavy, and resonant with human intention.
Rather than placing the luminaires in traditional white void studio settings, we built virtual brutalist and organic architectural sanctuaries. Light was treated as a physical sculpting medium—bending through mouth-blown borosilicate glass, grazing across porous travertine stone, and casting nuanced penumbral shadows across minimal concrete interiors.
Shading Architecture & Subsurface Scattering
Capturing the subtle interplay between emitted luminance and physical materials required a specialized shading hierarchy:
- Micro-Surface Imperfections: Every metal finish was mapped with subtle roughness variations—microscopic polishing marks, dust patina, and oxidation gradients that catch specular grazing angles naturally.
- Spectral Dispersion in Glass: Instead of treating glass as a simple refractive index, we simulated chromatic dispersion, splitting glancing light rays into delicate prismatic rainbows along sharp chamfers.
- Multi-Pass AOV Compositing: Cryptomatte, depth passes, ambient occlusion, and direct specular reflections were rendered out separately as 32-bit floating point EXRs, granting total granular control during finishing in DaVinci Fusion.
From Concept to Digital Exhibition
The final imagery bridged the gap between architectural photography and speculative industrial design. The assets provided Maison Lumen with complete creative freedom before physical fabrication, allowing their marketing team to orchestrate digital lookbooks and flagship spatial projections seamlessly across European design capitals.
Translating an avant-garde luminaire collection into digital environments without losing the organic tactile reality of brushed brass, blown glass, and delicate light falloff.
A bespoke physically based rendering (PBR) pipeline utilizing custom HDR light sweeps, micro-displacement surface imperfections, and spectral dispersion simulation.
Adopted as Maison Lumen's central visual identity across Milan Design Week, international press kits, and interactive digital retail spaces.
